Pokemon Amie: Sobble

This little guy has been sitting on my desk ever since I made him. Every time I look away from my computer screen I see him, and my heart is warmed by his face and I feel the urge to squeeze his little toes. So I do. It is as wonderful as you might imagine!

This little guy stands approximately 6" tall (with the fin) and will fit quite nicely in the palm of your hand.

And now you can make your own Sobble and experience these same joys! The pattern here is free, but if you'd rather have a printable version or if you'd like to throw a little support my way, a PDF version is available on Ravelry for the tiny sum of a single toonie!

Materials

• Size E (3.5mm) Crochet Hook
• Worsted Weight Yarn
  • I used Red Heart Super Saver in:
    • Blue
    • Delft Blue
    • Light Blue
    • Cornmeal
    • Soft White
• Yarn Needle
• Stuffing

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• sc – single crochet
• hdc - half double crochet
• dc - double crochet
• inc – two single crochet in same stitch
• dec – invisible decrease
• ss – slip stitch
• cc – colour change
• blo – back loop only

Techniques

I have a useful guide on all the different techniques I use when I make amigurumi. Obviously, you should stick with whatever techniques you are comfortable with when making amigurumi, but I still recommend checking it out if you wanna get a result as close to mine as possible!

This pattern will ask you to work invisible decreases while working in BLO. To do this, work the invisible decrease the same as your would regularly, but use the back loop instead of the front loop.

Head

Starting in medium blue (Red Heart Super Saver Delft Blue)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic circle. (TINY SEAM: ss to first sc, sc ONLY when starting next round) (6sc)
Rnd 2: inc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc) around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: (sc 3, inc) around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: (sc 4, inc) around. (36 sc)
Rnd 7: sc around. (36 sc)
Rnd 8: sc 17, cc to light blue (LB), sc 2, cc to regular blue (RB), sc 17. (36 sc)
Rnd 9: sc 15, cc to LB, sc 6, cc to RB, sc 15. (36 sc)
Rnd 10: sc 13, cc to LB, sc 10, cc to RB, sc 13. (36 sc)
Rnd 11: (sc 5, inc) x2, cc to LB, sc 3, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 3, cc to RB, (sc 5, inc) x2. (42 sc)

Rnd 13: (sc 5, dec) x2, cc to LB, sc 3, dec, sc 4, dec, sc 3, cc to RB, (sc 5, dec) x2. (36 sc)

At this point, begin to stuff the head. Try to keep the stuffing light near the bottom so that the head will have a flat-ish bottom.

Rnd 17: WORKING IN BLO: (sc, dec) x2, cc to LB, sc, dec, dec, sc, cc to RB, (sc, dec) x2. (12 sc)

Body

Continuing from head:

Rnd 1-2 (x2): sc 4, cc to LB, sc 4, cc to RB, sc 4. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x2, cc to LB, sc, inc, inc, sc, cc to RB, (sc, inc) x2. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc) x2, cc to LB, sc, inc, sc 2, inc, sc, cc to RB, (sc 2, inc) x2. (24 sc)

Stuff the neck firmly so that the head can stay upright and balanced. Don’t skimp on the stuffing here.

Rnd 5-6 (x2): sc 8, cc to LB, sc 8, cc to RB, sc 8. (24 sc)
Rnd 7: (sc 3, inc) x2, cc to LB, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, cc to RB, (sc 3, inc) x2. (30 sc)

Rnd 9: sc 12, cc to LB, sc 6, cc to RB (drop LB yarn), sc 12. (30 sc)
Rnd 10: (sc 3, dec) around. (24 sc)
Rnd 11: (sc 2, dec) around. (18 sc)
Rnd 12: WORKING IN BLO: (sc, dec) around. (12 sc)

Stuff the body.

Rnd 13: WORKING IN BOTH LOOPS: dec around. (6 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for a Weaving Finish.

Tail

Starting with dark blue yarn.

Rnd 1: ch 4 tightly, sc in 2^nd ch from hook. sc in next, 3 sc in last. Rotate. sc in next, 2 sc in last. ss to first. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in first, sc in next, 2 sc in each of next 3, sc in next, 2 sc in each of next 2. ss to first. (14 sc)
Rnd 3-7 (x5): sc around. (14 sc)

On last repeat, cc to RB using round beginning colour change.

Rnd 8-27 (x20): sc around (14 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Here's how to roll up the tail:

Roll the tail so that the end and the colour change meet. Mark the middle stitches at this point

Thread dark blue yarn through these points twice and pull tight.

Tie a tight double knot.

Cut the ends very close to the knot.

Stuff the next section of the tail lightly.

Roll like in this picture (until tail is about half its original length). Fasten in the same way as before.

Stuff the last section.

Roll like this picture (until the colour change nearly meets the light blue). Fasten like before.

Legs

Make two using RB.

Rnd 1: sc 4 in magic circle. (sc 4)
Rnd 2-4 (x3): sc around. (sc 4)
Rnd 5: ch 5 in first. sc in 2^nd from hook.sc in next 3, ss to originating stitch. ss to next. ss to next. ch 5, sc in 2^nd from hook. sc in next 3, ss to originating stitch. ss to next. ss to first.

Here’s some pictures to help you visualize this round:

ch 5 in the first stitch. mark the stitch for later.

sc from 2nd chain from hook to last

ss to first. repeat this in the 3rd stitch of leg

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Thread the tail through the centre of the leg, coming out of the top of leg.

Arms

Make two using RB.

Rnd 1: sc 4 in magic circle. (sc 4)
Rnd 2-3 (x2): sc around. (sc 4)
Rnd 4: ch 3 in first. sc in 2^nd from hook. sc in next, ss to originating stitch. ss to next. ss to next. ch 3, sc in 2^nd from hook. Sc in next, ss to originating stitch. ss to next. ss to first.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Thread the tail through the centre of the leg, coming out of the top of leg.

Fin

Using the yellow yarn:

ch5. ss in 2^nd ch from hook. sc in next. hdc in next. 9 dc in last, rotate. hdc in next. sc in next. ss in last. Turn. ch 1, sc in sc. 3 hdc in next. ss to next. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Weave the tail diagonally through the fin so that it comes out of the first sc, like so:

Eyes

Make two. Start with DB yarn.

Rnd 1: ch 4 tightly, sc in 2^nd ch from hook. sc in next. sc in last, cc to White (W). In the same ch as the last sc, 2 sc. Now there are 3 sc total in the last ch, 1 in DB and 2 in W. Rotate. sc in next. 2 sc in last. ss to first.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in first. sc. (2 sc in next) x3. sc. (2 sc in next) x2. ss to first. Fasten off, leaving tail for sewing.

Cheeks

Make two. Start with DB yarn.

Rnd 1: ch 4 tightly. sc in 2^nd ch from hook. sc in next. 3 sc in last. Rotate. sc in next. 2 sc in last. ss to first. Fasten off with tail for sewing.

Putting It All Together!

Now that all the parts are finished, let’s put this little guy together!

Here are the placements for arms, legs, and tail.

The legs start in the RB stitch right beside where the LB belly ends. They will be sewed on through two stitches of the BLO row.

The arms are attached on the first round with inc of the body, starting one stitch away from the belly. This is about the 3rd row down from the head. Mark the next stitch so that you'll be sewing the arms on with two stitches.

The tail seam is the middle of the tail, and should line up with the seam on the body. I let the tail be 5 stitches wide, and 2 stitches tall. Attach the bottom part of the tail to the BLO row.

Before the tail is completely sewn on, you can add some extra stuffing to it if desired.

Now we'll add an extra attach point higher up on the tail and to the body.

mark two stitches that are on the lower end of where the tail rests flush against the body. thread double, tie a double knot, and cut the ends close to the knot.

Now that we’re done with the parts, let’s continue on to the face.

Pin the details on in the way pictured, or in whatever way looks best to you. The sides of the eyes are two stitches away from the first row of pale blue. The top of the eyes are two rows higher than that row. The cheeks are lined up roughly in the middle of the eyes, interlapping only 1 stitch of the light blue.

Embroider on a mouth using the dark blue yarn.

The corners of the mouth are two stitches away from the cheeks, one stitch up from the BLO row. The next markers are one row above the corners, two stitches inward.

Next, we need to attach the top fin. Attach it diagonally on the top of the head, starting from the centre magic ring stitches, like so:

Once that’s sewed on, we’ll be adding a dark blue ridge on top.

Attach dark blue yarn in the stitch in front of the fin. sc in the same stitch.

sc in the stitches up the fin, up to and including the 3rd dc. ss into the next. fasten off.

To hide the tail, I weaved it through the front loops of the sc down back to the body, tied a knot, and hid the end.

And...you're done!!!

This is the first pattern I've ever released, so it might be a little rough around the edges. But I hope you enjoyed  it anyway!
